Aharon Appelfeld was born in Chernivtsi in 1932 and died near Tel Aviv in 2018. He survived persecution and the war in a ghetto, a camp, the Ukrainian forests, and later as a kitchen boy in the Red Army. He arrived in Palestine in 1946 and later became a professor of literature in Israel. His novels and memoirs, including *My Parents*, were published in more than 35 languages and received, among other honors, the Prix Médicis and the Nelly Sachs Prize.
