Reviewed by Raphaela Die Hochzeit ihrer Cousine mit einem Engländer hatte in Noemis Familie bereits für Unruhe gesorgt. Nun erhalten sie einen seltsamen Brief, der nichts Gutes ahnen lässt. Auf bitten ihres Vaters macht sich Noemi auf den Weg, um zu erforschen, was vor sich geht. Sie findet ihre Cousine in desolatem Zustand, in einem verrottenden Herrenhaus, bewohnt von einem sterbenden Patriarchen und dem Rest seiner Dynastie und schnell wird ihr klar, dass etwas nicht mit rechten Dingen vor sich geht. Hm, ich weiß nicht so recht, was ich davon halten soll. Den Hype um das Buch teile ich nicht, aber es war nicht schlecht. Die Themen sind gewöhnungsbedürftig, die Prota agiert für meinen Geschmack bisweilen etwas zu modern für die Zeit und ich empfinde das Buch als etwas zu lang für die Geschichte, die es erzählt. Auch stört mich, dass es immer wieder seitenweise Exposition benötigt, um die Hintergründe zu erklären. T. Kingfisher behandelt in ihrem "What moves the Dead" eine ähnliche Grundidee und ich fand sie deutlich ansprechender umgesetzt. Vielleicht war es aber auch der Grund, dass ich den großen Twist schon geahnt habe.
Reviewed by VerenaIt was a nice read. A friend told me it's scary and normally I don't read or watch horror stuff because I'm scared very easily but this book was not scary at all. Not even a bit. the writing was nice. The story too. Just expected something different and a biiit more.
