In the fields of rural China, Wang Lung begins married life with little more than a modest home, a parcel of land, and the determination to build a secure future. Beside him stands O-Lan, whose strength, endurance, and quiet sacrifice become the foundation of their growing family. As harvests flourish and fail, Wang Lung’s fortunes rise and fall with the earth itself. Poverty gives way to prosperity, yet wealth introduces new desires, divisions, and moral compromises. Through famine, migration, family conflict, and social upheaval, the bond between people and the land remains at the heart of their survival.
