Rezension von AntoniaOH. MY. GOD. This book was absolutely amazing ohmygodohmygodohmygod. I genuinely don't think I have loved a book this much in a long time. This is basically about two young men, who are in college together, a lot of extraordinary things happen and they are forced to part ways. Then they kind of become obsessed with the idea of killing each other (very painfully). (AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES.) First of all, V. E. Schwab's writing style is amazing and the way she writes relationships between characters?? SO GOOD!! I looooved that we got so many perspectives, it made the characters even more dimensional than they already were. The plot is also so so creative and was executed perfectly, like how do you even come up with that? There are a lot of time jumps in this book, mainly between two different timelines, which made the plot so interesting. I had no problems switching between the timelines and the second I started a chapter with a new timeline, I was just immediately immersed in it. And I mean I just loved the whole theme of it. Yk, there's no real hero and no real villain, it's not as easy as that. And the whole unreliable narrator thing also worked really well with that. I just loved every second of this and I think it was perfect so please read it!!! "But these words people threw around - humans, monsters, heroes, villains - to Victor it was all just a matter of semantics. Someone could call themselves a hero and still walk around killing dozens. Someone else could be labeled a villain for trying to stop them. Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human."
Rezension von HelenI really liked how this book played with the whole hero vs. villain dynamic. It wasn’t the typical “good guy = good, bad guy = bad” setup. It showed the messy gray areas in between, and I loved that. The plot and overall concept were super unique and kept me interested. That being said… it just didn’t fully grab me, and I honestly don’t even know why. For me, a great book always makes me feel something — joy, heartbreak, rage, anything — and here I just kind of… didn’t. Not in a bad way, but not in a “crying in fetal position on my floor” way either. Still, it was an interesting and well-written read, especially with the different POVs and timelines. Definitely worth checking out if you like morally gray chaos.
