A display of Nikara gratitude and etiquette. Proof they were civilized. Rin was so tired of having to prove her humanity.
Content Warnings: • War and Violence • Genocide and War Crimes • Sexual Assault • Torture and Abuse • Drug Use and Addiction • Self-Harm and Suicidal Ideation • Racism and Xenophobia (depictions of ethnic discrimination and xenophobia) • Colonialism and Imperialism • Child Abuse, Infanticide, and Child Death • Mentions of Cannibalism, Mental Illness & Trauma, Religious Trauma, PTSD Okay. DAMN. That ending?? I need a moment. Fang Runin. Her redemption arc is setting up to be something truly wild, and I am so here for it. I would give this second installment 4 stars—just like the first one—but for entirely different reasons. The Dragon Republic was really good. Everything I took issue with at the end of The Poppy War felt addressed right at the beginning of this book. Kuang doesn’t shy away from the consequences of her characters’ actions and choices. She leans into the weight of it all, and it pays off emotionally and narratively. The story is full of twists, heartbreak, and betrayal. It’s beautifully tragic—I found myself laughing at the banter one moment and weeping the next. The emotional rollercoaster felt well-earned. What I especially appreciated this time around were the even stronger parallels to real-world history and political movements. The story forces you to think beyond the pages—about colonialism, power, identity, and the long-term impact of war. It raises uncomfortable questions and doesn’t pretend to offer easy answers, which makes it linger in your mind long after finishing. Rin continues to be a deeply flawed and compelling protagonist, and the decisions she faces only grow heavier. While she isn’t easy to love, she’s impossible to look away from. In the end she is that Bitch. All in all, The Dragon Republic is a powerful continuation of an already intense and thought-provoking series. I can’t wait to see how Kuang concludes this journey in the final book.

Such a good book with so many plot twists. It is quite dark and heavy, but you really see the devastating effect of war and all the politics involved. At first I found it hard to like Rin but once I realized she’s literally a teenager and all the stuff she has to deal with I grew to love her. These books would make an awesome tv show!
