ich liebe sprache und das buch hat mein verständnis von sprache nochmal krass verändert aber abgesehen davon hat mich die story nicht so sehr gecatched die charaktere waren irgendwie ur oberflächlich und ich hab die ganze zeit auf die love story zwischen robin und ramy gewartet aber es kam keine :((

Ein Roman, der sein meistes Pulver auf den ersten 200 Seiten verschießt und dann auf 500 weitere Seiten durch seine eigene Welt geistert. Es könnte alles so dringend und dramatisch sein, doch die Charaktere sind immer meilenweit von der Action entfernt. Show don’t Tell, heißt es, doch das Gegenteil ist in diesem Roman der Fall. Nichtsdestotrotz ist es ein beeindruckender Roman, der sprachtheoretisch überzeugt, wo der Plot versagt.

The language/translation aspects are so intriguing; I loved the setting and the magic realism aspect! The characters felt a bit flat to me and acted a little like templates, though. Footnotes are a nice touch, especially when revealing their inner life only to the reader, but it could have been used more often.

⭐️5 Even though it dragged a little bit at the end when they were in the tower, the ending brought everything together. Not just the events, but the way it was written, too. RF Kuang wrote this perfectly and I am so happy that I decided to pick this book up, purely from the front cover and the name. I will recommend this to anyone who’s asking because it’s so so so good. It really has made me think and I don’t think I will ever be the same about languages. It has honestly increased my respect, for RF Kuang and for languages and anybody who studies languages.
