THE SON OF NEPTUNE

von Rick Riordan

Format:Hardcover

This is the second title in this number one, bestselling spin-off series from Percy Jackson creator, Rick Riordan. This crazy messed up world of gods and monsters is Percy Jackson's reality, which pretty much sucks for him. Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon, God of the Sea, has woken from a very deep sleep and come face to face with two snake-haired ladies who refuse to die. But they're the least of his problems. Because Percy finds himself at a camp for half-bloods, which doesn't ring any bells for him. There's just one name he remembers from his past: Annabeth. Only one thing is certain - Percy's questing days aren't over. He and fellow demigods Frank and Hazel must face the most important quest of all: the Prophecy of Seven. If they fail, it's not just their camp at risk. Percy's old life, the gods, and the entire world might be destroyed...

I already know I would love this! The first half was definitely a little bit slower and it basically had the same structure as the first half of The Lost Hero: introducing the new heroes, talking about their pasts and their hidden and dangerous abilities. But when we actually get to go on the quest the story picks up and I loved every minute of it. After that ending I already know that The Mark of Athena is going to be EPIC! Full review soon! ____________________________ Sometimes you just need a book that you know you're going to love. You know what to expect from it and you know you won't be disappointed. For me, every book Rick Riordan writes is one of those. This one was no exception. When I opened the book to the page of the first chapter and saw the title I already had a smile on my face: Percy is back! It was so good to read from his perspective again since he was missing in the entire first book of the series. As always, we start of with him being chased by monsters trying to kill him. While trying to escape them he finds himself in a camp full of demigods - but this time it's not Camp Half-Blood. Exploring and getting to know Camp Jupiter, the Roman demigod camp, is just so much fun. Seeing how different they live from the demigods in Camp Half-Blood was really interesting and I wouldn't hesitate spending my holiday in both of the camps. Percy is able to defeat the monster chasing him with the help of our new main characters, Hazel and Frank. Like in The Lost Hero, the new characters are the misfits at their camp and everyone is expecting them to fail with everything they do. I really like how the author builds up the character to go from "zero to hero". Both Frank and Hazel are very likeable and I had a great time reading the chapters in their perspectives. Similar to Piper, Leo and Jason in the first book, they have a secret gift (which by the way are both pretty cool) that is threatening to destroy them but as they go along they are able to control and use them to do good. There was a lot of character development and seeing the three of them bonding and becoming a team was one of the best parts of the entire book for me. We also meet some characters from previous books which I think was really cool too. The first half of the book was basically an introduction to the new camp and the new characters but it wouldn't be a Rick Riordan book without some action. In the second part of the book Percy, Frank and Hazel start their adventure to Alaska. As always, it is full of action, twists and turns. Also, the story is told with so much humor and is packed with funny moments that you are not able to read through without at least laugh out loud once and that is one of the reason I love to read about the demigod world. Overall I absolutely enjoyed The Son of Neptune. It definitely had a similar feel and structure as The Lost Hero but still I had a great time reading it. All I can say is: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The slight cliffhanger at the end is indicating that the next book in the series, The Mark of Athena, is going to take a different route and will be even more adventurous and action packed as the previous books in the series. If you loved the PJO series and you haven't picked up The Lost Hero yet: Do it! You will love it as much as Percy's previous adventures. And for everyone that hasn't even picked up the PJO series: What are you waiting for?
