Although I still liked the first one more, Scarlet still had its own good spark for me. I jumped into it right after I finished Cinder, and I must say, this book didn’t disappoint me either. First of all, Wolf. I didn’t really like him at first. He was too humble and shy and a little bit too innocent for a muscular guy with tattoos and fangs most people would be afraid of. However, I like it whenever he’s on kill mode. (I like describing the moment he’s fighting without thinking as “kill mode.” Yeah, I don’t even know.) The action is there, and all the innocence I got annoyed of dissipates. But if you like wolves and such, maybe you’ll love him more than I did. Second of all, Scarlet. In one of Marissa Meyer’s blog posts, she described her as a girl who “does before she thinks.” I’m not really fond of those types of people, and I get that Scarlet’s dead worried about her lost grandmother, but can she just weigh the possibilities first? She could kill herself for being such a reckless girl (which is something she’s actually willing to do, but still). However, I do feel the worry she has for Michelle Benoit. Even I would be as worried as her if my own grandmother suddenly disappeared out of thin air. Eventually, I ended up forgiving Scarlet for her recklessness. Third of all, Thorne. If you’ve read one of my commentaries while I was reading Goodreads, you’re probably already aware of how I’m one of the 13,089,349,234 billion girls who’s fawning over him. I mean, c’mon. He’s the best comic relief! I always enjoy reading parts where he’s included in it. He may be a bit cocky and self-absorbed, but I do feel like he’s got a touch of kindness here and there. Fourth of all, Iko. She and Thorne are definitely a good pair. Best comic relief buddies ever. Plus, even I was as glad as Cinder the moment she made a comeback. I missed this childish android as much as she did. And that scene where Iko <spoiler>just woke up and found out she’s a ship</spoiler>? I laughed ‘till the end. Fifth of all, I loved the chapters that got some action kicked in it, especially the one where Scarlet <spoiler>finally escapes</spoiler>. The fear of the gang getting caught and the moment Cinder uses her Lunar abilities got me hooked ‘till I realized I’ve finished the book. Scarlet is definitely a good book. Although I wasn’t fond of the two main characters as much as I did with Cinder and Kai, I’ll still give this book a 4.5 out of 5.
This book has it all! Interesting characters, love, action and suspense. And space ships, not to forget! I fall in love more and more with this series and I have no idea how I should survive until January 2016 when "Winter" (4th book) will be published in German. Btw, the German covers are stunning. I like the English ones too, but the German covers - bookshelf candy! Marissa Meyer is a genius in plotting. The story is so well structured and so logical, nevertheless you can't really guess what happens next. Cinder is back! I like her as if she's my little sister! Her story was so heart ripping and now she's finally back. Still fighting, still struggling with her identify. I love that her story goes on, she's still a main character and we even hear the story from her point of view. We meet again Levana, the evil witch (sorry, queen) from Luna. She's a great villain. So cruel, so straight following her plans! Kai is also back. Also we meet some new main characters: Scarlett of course, she is a kick ass woman! I liked her instantly! Then there's Thorne, a funny guy who's a bit reminding me of Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean). And Wolf, ahhhh - he's the hot, dangerous guy and long time you can't say if he's a good one or a bad one; for sure he has a lot of (shocking) secrets. I'm really looking forward to Cress and Winter, how they will find to the others and what's their connection and backstory. Please more androids like Iko and more Cyborgs! It's such a highlight of this series!
That's my reading challenge done right there. And what a great finale to the year! Marissa Meyer seems to be getting better in writing. I don't like Scarlet as much as I loved Cinder. There were too much fighting parts for my taste but I guess I loved Cinder mire because the whole world was completely new. Anyhow I'm soooooooo excited for Cress!
Even more thrilling than the first one,I'm amazed at how the author adapted the fairytales and molded them into her main plot. The characters are envolving and you become really invested in them throught the series, they are so complex and well written it's impossible not to feel something for them. Scarlet is definetly my favorite so far, she's so fierce! I love Cinder as a protagonist but Scarlet won me over in the first chapter. Can't wait to read Cress and Winter!
I enjoyed this book. The story-line keeps building with new characters being introduced that fit seamlessly into the plot and despite me thinking it will subsequently turn into a jumbled over complicated mess, continues to be a great read. A fantastic series with a new fresh take on the Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood tales, with great detailed writing by the author.
