Problematic Summer Romance
von Ali Hazelwood
What is wrong meets what feels right in this romance set in Italy by the Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author of Deep End. Maya Killgore is twenty-three and still in the process of figuring out her life. Conor Harkness is thirty-eight, and Maya cannot stop thinking about him. It's such a cliché, it almost makes her heart implode: older man and younger woman; successful biotech guy and struggling grad student; brother's best friend and the girl he never even knew existed. As Conor loves to remind her, the power dynamic is too imbalanced. Any relationship between them would be problematic in too many ways to count, and Maya should just get over him. After all, he has made it clear that he wants her gone from his life. But not everything is as it seems - and clichés sometimes become plot twists. When Maya's brother decides to get married in Taormina, she and Conor end up stuck together in a romantic Sicilian villa for over a week. There, on the beautiful Ionian coast, between ancient ruins, delicious foods, and natural caves, Maya realizes that Conor might be hiding something from her. And as the destination wedding begins to erupt out of control, she decides that a summer fling might be just what she needs - even if it's a problematic one.
I liked a few of Ali Hazelwoods other books and therefore started this one. But I didn’t really like the setup of the wedding and didn’t like the male lead at all. The constant talking about the age gap and especially the way he talked about that was weird in my opinion and repetitive. If you think you shouldn’t be with a younger woman, than just don’t boy.
#ProblematicSummerRomance sounded like the perfect read, but… honestly, it was kind of a disappointment 😭 I did love the tropes - I mean, summer vibes, forbidden romance, brothers’ best friend dynamic, age-gap tension - so many of my favorites rolled into one story☀️ I also really enjoyed Maya and Connor’s friendship; their bond felt genuine, honest, and grounded 🥰 The past-and-present chapters added depth, giving context to their relationship and making it more relatable. Plus, the writing is easy and breezy, perfect for a light, beachy afternoon escape 📖 But… there were definitely flaws 😩 Connor came off a bit controlling, and I wasn’t fully sold on his emotional growth until the very last chapters 🤷🏽♀️. Maya was frustratingly childish at times, which made it harder to connect with her👎🏼 The storyline itself felt slow - a lot of “one step forward, two steps back” moments…nothing much happend👀 And the main issue for me? The age-gap topic. It was brought up so frequently that it started to feel like the ***only*** thing defining their relationship🙄 That was a no for me🙅🏽♀️ Overall, enjoyable in parts but not quite the perfect summer romance I was hoping for🥲 . . . . Rating : 3⭐️ Spice : 2🌶️ Recommendation :❓
