Rezension von Raphaela Es sollte ein kleines Abenteuer werden, als die 16jährige Alice sich mit ihrer besten Freundin in die Old City schleicht. Doch dann passiert etwas, etwas schreckliches an das sich Alice jedoch nicht mehr erinnern kann. Zurück geblieben sind nur eine riesige Narbe in ihrem Gesicht und das Gestammel von Mr Rabbit, der ihr das angetan hat. All das führte dazu, dass Alice nun seit 10 Jahren in der Psychatrie weggesperrt wurde. Doch nun regt sich etwas in den Tiefen des Gebäudes und es ist erst der Anfang eines langen und gefährlichen Abenteuers. Ok, mit diesem Buch hat sich Christina Henry endgültig an die Spitze meiner neuen Lieblingsautoren gesetzt, auch wenn sie sich den Platz noch mit P&C teilen muss. Ich mag den Stil, ich mag die Erzählweise, die fantasievolle Art, wie sie aus den altbekannten Figuren und Geschichten etwas vollkommen Neues zaubert - auch wenn ich bei Mr Carpenter zu Beginn auf dem Schlauch stand. Es ist keine angenehme Geschichte, es geht um Menschenhandel, Prostitution, Sklaverei, Vergewaltigung und Bandenkriege, eingebettet in eine magische Welt und es geht stellenweise sehr an die Nieren, damit muss man beim Lesen umgehen können. Aber ich kann absolut verstehen, dass es als Highlight für 2022 gelistet wurde, für mich kommt es definitiv ebenfalls auf diese Liste.

Rezension von James LückIt reads like fanfiction, and it's not a bad thing. I couldn't put it down, finished the whole thing in two days. That's one of the few books I'm excited to read the next one in the series.

I like all the details (the roses, the rats, the labyrinth) and how the author turned all the characters into badass dark characters. Also the references to the different original wonderland utensils like the potion was really good. BUT there are some things I didn't like and what confused me: at some point in the book Alice and Hatcher apparently started to be in love? When? There was no significant moment. It was just like: Ok they are in love right now. Furthermore, the character of the Chesire Cat (don't know the English name because I read it in German) is not a wizard. This has been mentioned multiple time by the book but in the end he is a wizard? Also, it seemed like some scenes were over to fast without fitting transitions. Moreover, the whole book is about Alice personal story and her traumatic events with the rabbit. And the final scene with the rabbit really has been too short and too fast. There are some significant critic points about how this book has been written but overall, the world is so amazing there! So many lovely and dark details. I really enjoyed reading it
