In this book we get a third pov which bothered me at first because I do not particularly like the character. However I like that I do not like the character. Does that make sense? Everyone is distinct and everyone has flaws and different ways of thinking and acting and all that you feel through the writing. I really really like that, even though it is this that makes the third pov all the more bothersome. Oftentimes when a book changes pov it feels like pointing the camera at a different person but still standing behind the camera. Sabaa Tahir drops the camera. She does open some storylines that I think would have benefited from being opened sooner or at least hinted at but who knows maybe she did and I didn’t notice or forgot. It all gets impossibly more complicated and intricate and dark—good heavens. The blood. The horror. I love it. It is also still ya—of course—which makes the romance…well. But it’s really just a subplot. Come to think of it the romance is really the only place where the books feel like ya. I am neck deep in the Ember Quartet now and this lovely, horrible world Sabaa Tahir has created has me in a chokehold. It is very addictive.

This was action-packed, relentless, and devastating. I am hearbroken and upset, but I will keep on reading because IT'S THAT GOOD. Oh my God, this was just as amazing as the first book! It just kept going, and going, and going. I'm absolutely obsessed with this series.
