Sabaa Tahir worked as a newspaper editor, including at The Washington Post, and grew up in her family’s motel in California’s Mojave Desert. There, she read extensively in the fantasy genre and played guitar and piano. She became known for the An Ember in the Ashes series, also referred to as the Elias and Laia novels, which has been translated into numerous languages. Her novel So viel Zorn und so viel Liebe received the National Book Award and the Printz Award.
