A Thousand Splendid Suns

von Khaled Hosseini

Format:Hardcover

Propelled by the same superb instinct for storytelling that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, the #1 New York Times bestseller A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once an incredible chronicle of thirty years of Afghan history and a deeply moving story of family, friendship, faith, and the salvation to be found in love.“Just as good, if not better, than Khaled Hosseini’s best-selling first book, The Kite Runner.”—NewsweekKhaled Hosseini returns with a beautiful, riveting, and haunting novel that confirms his place as one of the most important literary writers today.Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them-in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul-they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation. With heart-wrenching power and suspense, Hosseini shows how a woman's love for her family can move her to shocking and heroic acts of self-sacrifice, and that in the end it is love, or even the memory of love, that is often the key to survival.A stunning accomplishment, A Thousand Splendid Suns is a haunting, heartbreaking, compelling story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love.

It broke my heart because this is the world we live in. I finished the book and I don't know what to do with myself. Still, all I can think about is, what can I do? Because I should do something. Anything.

"Kiss Aziza for me",she said. "Tell her she's the noor of my eyes and the sultan of my heart." Absolutely heartbreaking. "One last time Mariam did as she was told" "But the game involves only male names. Because , if it's a girl, Laila has already named her. How can someone write something so heartbreaking. And this whole thing is probably another woman's reality. Oh Lord, my heart and my prayers go out to woman who are living lives like this. Every women in this book was hurting. From Nana to Mariam to Laila. People are suffering. People are being met with death. War is absolutely terrifying. The fact that there are women somewhere living like Nana, Mariam, Laila's mother, Laila herself, Tariq, Aziza, Laila's dad, Izmai, just everyone is this book is absolutely heartbreaking. This book is also a great book history wise. I learned quite a lot about the Afghan story and I'm surprised most of the things I didn't even know or wouldn't even guessed like the soviets being in Afghanistan. This is a book I would recommend to anyone. It's absolutely amazing and let's you see things deeper than they are. My heart goes out to all the people in Afghanistan who are currently under the taliban their freedom robbed from them. This is painful.
