Wolfgang von Wangenheim studied German literature in Göttingen and subsequently taught at universities in Paris, Abidjan, and Dakar. From 1977 onward, he worked as a freelance writer. His publications included studies of Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Casanova, Wilhelm Heinse, Hans Henny Jahnn, and Hubert Fichte. His work on art and literature focused particularly on the relationship between myth and the work of art, as well as on the reception of antiquity from the Renaissance to Winckelmann.
