Wolf Erlbruch

Wolf Erlbruch (1948–2022) was a German illustrator and children’s author. He studied graphic design with a focus on drawing at the Folkwang School in Essen and initially worked as a freelance illustrator in advertising before beginning to write and illustrate children’s books in the late 1980s. From 1990 onward, he taught illustration at the Fachhochschule Düsseldorf, the University of Wuppertal and the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. His many honors included the German Youth Literature Prize in 1993 for “The Bear’s Wonder,” the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig and the Special Prize of the German Youth Literature Prize in 2003, the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2006, and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2017.
