Władysław Bartoszewski (1922–2015) was a Polish politician and diplomat. After finishing school in 1939, he worked as a medical orderly and was arrested in 1940; he spent six months in Auschwitz concentration camp. After the Second World War, he worked as a journalist and was active in Polish PEN, serving as its secretary-general from 1972 to 1982. He joined the Solidarity trade union in 1980. Later, he was a visiting professor at several German universities and served as Poland’s ambassador to Vienna from 1990 to 1995. He was foreign minister in 1995 and again in 2000–01. In 1986, he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Bartoszewski died in Warsaw in 2015.
