Werner Hilgemann

Werner Hilgemann (1921–2004) was a German historian, Germanist, and theologian. He studied in Leipzig, Marburg, and Münster before working until his retirement as a teacher of German and history at the Max Planck Gymnasium in Bielefeld. He is best known as the co-author, with Hermann Kinder, of the dtv-Atlas Weltgeschichte, whose first volume was published in 1964 and whose second volume followed two years later. Hilgemann had previously contributed to Putzger’s Historical World Atlas and developed historical wall maps for the Justus Perthes publishing house. He died in Bielefeld in 2004.
