Werner Heisenberg (1901–1976) was a German theoretical physicist. He was born in Würzburg on 5 December 1901 and died in Munich on 1 February 1976. His work on quantum mechanics had a major influence on 20th-century physics. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle, named after him, became a fundamental concept of quantum mechanics. He received the 1932 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in this field. Heisenberg also made important contributions to nuclear and particle physics.
