Werner Breig (born 1932 in Zwickau) is a German musicologist and music editor. He studied Protestant church music as well as musicology, art history and library science in Berlin, Erlangen-Nuremberg and Hamburg. He received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1962 and completed his habilitation in Freiburg in 1973. After academic positions in Freiburg and Karlsruhe, he became professor of musicology at the University of Wuppertal in 1979. From 1988 until his retirement in 1997, he held the chair of musicology at the University of Bochum. His work focuses on the analysis and editing of 17th- and 18th-century compositions, particularly works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Heinrich Schütz. Breig founded the Schütz-Jahrbuch.
