Martin Geck

Martin Geck (1936–2019) was a German musicologist and author. He studied musicology, philosophy and theology in Münster, Berlin and Kiel, and received his doctorate in 1962. In 1966, he became a founding editor of the complete edition of Richard Wagner’s works; after working as an editor and writing music textbooks, he was appointed professor of musicology at the University of Dortmund in 1976. Geck published extensively on music history and wrote biographies of major composers, including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Mozart and Wagner. He received the Gleim Literature Prize for his book on Johann Sebastian Bach.
