Walker Evans

Walker Evans (1903–1975) was an American photographer. Born in Missouri, he initially studied literature before deciding in 1928 to become a photographer. He became known for his direct, restrained images of American everyday life and its surroundings. His major publications include *American Photographs* (1938) and *Let Us Now Praise Famous Men* (1941), made with James Agee. His work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Evans wrote art and film criticism for *Time* in the 1940s, worked for *Fortune* from 1945 to 1965, and later taught at Yale University. He died in Connecticut in 1975.
