W. G. Sebald (1944–2001) was a German writer and scholar of German literature. Born in Wertach in the Allgäu region, he became a professor of German literature at the University of East Anglia in Norwich in 1988. His major works include the prose books “Vertigo,” “The Emigrants,” “The Rings of Saturn,” and “Austerlitz,” as well as the essay collections “Logis in einem Landhaus” and “Air War and Literature.” His writing was translated into numerous languages and received several awards, including the Mörike Prize, the Heinrich Böll Prize, the Joseph Breitbach Prize, and the Heinrich Heine Prize of the City of Düsseldorf. Sebald died in a car accident in England in 2001.
