Volkmar Essers

Volkmar Essers (born 1944) studied art history, archaeology and German studies in Bonn, Munich and Berlin. In 1972, he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on the sculptor Johann Friedrich Drake. He worked for many years as a curator at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, where he organized exhibitions on artists including Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst and Jackson Pollock. He authored numerous essays and books on 19th- and 20th-century art.
