Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a French artist and one of the leading figures of modern art. A pioneer and principal representative of Fauvism, he had a major influence on the development of modern art. In addition to painting and sculpture, he produced an extensive body of graphic work, including illustrations for Charles Baudelaire’s “Les Fleurs du Mal.” He is also known for his cutouts and collages made from painted paper, a process he described as “painting with scissors.” Matisse died in Nice in 1954.
