Vikram Seth was born in Calcutta in 1952 and studied at Oxford and Stanford. He is known primarily as a writer of novels and poetry. His verse novel The Golden Gate was written during his time in California. He drew on a journey from China to India through the Himalayas for Tianchi. For his novel A Suitable Boy, Seth spent two years travelling through Indian cities and villages. His other notable works include Two Lives.
