Victor-Mario Zaballa was born in Mexico City in 1954 and grew up in Cuernavaca. He is an artist who won first prize for traditional altars in Cuernavaca in 1982. For more than two decades, he created public altars annually for Día de los Muertos, including at Davies Symphony Hall and the SomArts Gallery in San Francisco.
