Uwe Timm (born 1940 in Hamburg) is a German writer. After his father’s death, he ran the family fur business for three years before completing his secondary education at the Braunschweig-Kolleg and studying philosophy and German literature in Munich and Paris. He earned a doctorate with a thesis on Albert Camus and subsequently studied sociology and economics. Timm worked as a freelance writer from 1971; he also wrote children’s and young-adult books and screenplays. His best-known works include *Heißer Sommer*, *Morenga*, *The Invention of Curried Sausage*, *Red*, *In My Brother’s Shadow*, and *Ikarien*. His awards include the Heinrich Böll Prize, the Carl Zuckmayer Medal, the Schiller Prize, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
