Ulla Lachauer, born in Ahlen, Westphalia, in 1951, studied history, philosophy and politics in Berlin. She worked as a freelance journalist and documentary filmmaker and published several books, including “Die Brücke von Tilsit” (1994), “Paradiesstraße” (1996), “Ostpreußische Lebensläufe” (1998), “Ritas Leute” (2002), “Der Akazienkavalier” (2008), and “Die blinde Gärtnerin” (2011). Her journalistic and film work repeatedly took her to rural regions in Eastern Europe and Asia, as well as southern Germany.
