Ueli Steck (1976–2017) was a Swiss extreme mountaineer. He became known for fast ascents of major Alpine north faces and high-altitude peaks. In 2009, he climbed Gasherbrum II, and in 2012 he climbed Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. In 2015, he completed the ascent of all 82 four-thousand-metre peaks in the Alps. Steck received the Eiger Award in 2008 and the Piolet d’Or in 2009 and 2014. He died in a mountaineering accident on 30 April 2017.
