Tonino Benacquista was born in 1961 to Italian immigrant parents. After beginning film studies, he supported himself through various jobs, including as a sleeping-car attendant and pizza chef, while starting to write crime novels. His original works received numerous awards. His novel "Malavita" was adapted for the screen by Luc Besson, starring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Tommy Lee Jones.
