Tobias Wolff, born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1945, is a writer best known for his short stories. In This Boy’s Life, he described his difficult childhood without a father; the book was adapted into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. He recounted his experiences as a soldier in the Vietnam War in In Pharaoh’s Army. In 2015, Wolff received the National Medal of Arts from Barack Obama.
