Thomas Stangl, born in Vienna in 1966, studied philosophy and Hispanic studies. He initially published essays, book reviews and shorter prose works before his debut novel, “Der einzige Ort,” appeared in 2004 and received the Aspekte Prize. His subsequent novels include “Ihre Musik” (2006), “Was kommt” (2009), “Regeln des Tanzes” (2013), “Fremde Verwandtschaften” (2018) and “Quecksilberlicht” (2022). He also published the essay collections “Reisen und Gespenster” (2012) and “Freiheit und Langeweile” (2016), as well as the short-prose collection “Die Geschichte des Körpers” (2019). His work has received, among other honors, the Literature Prize of the German Economy, the Erich Fried Prize, the Wortmeldungen Literature Prize, the Schiller Prize and the Austrian Art Prize for Literature.
