Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989) was an Austrian writer. He was born in Heerlen, the Netherlands, and grew up in Austria. After training as a commercial clerk, he initially worked as a journalist and court reporter before becoming a freelance writer in 1957. His first novel, *Frost*, was published in 1963. Other notable works include *Gargoyles*, *The Lime Works*, *Walking*, *Correction* and *The Voice Imitator*. Bernhard received, among other honors, the Austrian State Prize in 1967, the Georg Büchner Prize in 1970 and the Grimme Prize in 1972. He died in Gmunden in 1989.
