Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022) was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Zen master, poet, and peace activist. In Vietnam, he developed an engaged form of Buddhism and taught mindfulness, meditation, and nonviolent conflict resolution. After campaigning against the Vietnam War, he spent many years in exile, first in the United States and later in France. In 1982, he founded the Plum Village meditation center near Bordeaux, which became an international center for mindfulness practice. Thich Nhat Hanh wrote numerous books and played a major role in introducing Buddhist teachings and meditation to Western audiences. He returned to Vietnam in 2018 and died there on January 22, 2022.
