Theodor Plievier

Theodor Plievier (1892–1955) was a German writer and publicist. Born in Berlin to a working-class family, he served in the German navy during the First World War and took part in the sailors’ mutiny. After the war, he worked as an anarchist publicist and publisher of left-wing writings. He published his first books in 1929. In 1933 he emigrated to the Soviet Union and returned to the Soviet occupation zone in 1945. In 1947 he moved to the western occupation zones. His novel *Stalingrad* became one of the first bestsellers in postwar Germany. Plievier died in Switzerland in 1955.
