Tanja Brandes was born in Bonn in 1981. She studied dramaturgy, German studies and Romance languages and literature in Munich and Madrid. She subsequently worked as a political editor at the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and the General-Anzeiger in Bonn; in 2017, she became an editor at the Berliner Zeitung. In 2016, she received the DuMont Journalism Award for her reportage “Mein fremdes Land.”
