Tacitus (Publius or Gaius Cornelius Tacitus, c. 55–c. 117/120 AD) was a Roman historian, politician, and orator of the early imperial period. His senatorial career led to the consulship and, under Emperor Trajan, to the governorship of the province of Asia. His major works include *Agricola*, *Germania*, *Dialogus de Oratoribus*, *Historiae*, and *Annales*. In *Agricola*, he commemorated his father-in-law, Gnaeus Julius Agricola, who played a major role in the conquest of Britain. Tacitus is regarded as an incisive observer and a powerful stylist.
