Suzette Haden Elgin (1936–2015), born Patricia Anne Wilkins, was an American linguist and science fiction author. She earned a doctorate in linguistics in 1973 and taught at San Diego State University until her retirement in 1980. Her novels and stories often explored language and feminist themes. She is best known for the Native Tongue series, for whose fictional world she developed the constructed language Láadan and published a grammar in 1985. In 1978, she founded the Science Fiction Poetry Association.
