Suetonius, fully Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, was a Roman writer and biographer. He was probably born in North Africa around AD 70 and belonged to the equestrian class. After receiving an education and working as a lawyer, he entered the imperial administration under Trajan and Hadrian, serving among other roles at the imperial libraries and in the chancery. His positions gave him access to state archives. He lost his court appointment around AD 121 or 122 and probably devoted himself thereafter to writing and scholarship. His best-known work is the “Lives of the Caesars” (“De vita Caesarum”), a collection of biographies of Roman emperors. The date of his death is uncertain; he probably died after AD 122, possibly between 130 and 140.
