Sucharit Bhakdi (born 1946 in Washington, D.C.) is a German physician and microbiologist. After studying medicine and receiving his doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1970, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Immunobiology, the University of Copenhagen and the University of Giessen. From 1990 to 2012, he was professor and head of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Bhakdi published more than 300 scientific papers and received, among other distinctions, the Gotthard Schettler Prize, the Aronson Prize, the Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Prize and the Order of Merit of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate. With Karina Reiss, he co-authored several books, including the title “Corona: Fehlalarm?”, which was translated into ten languages.
