Stig Dagerman

Stig Dagerman (1923–1954) was a Swedish writer. He was born in Älvkarleby, north of Uppsala, and initially grew up with his paternal grandparents before moving to Stockholm to live with his father in 1931. After finishing school, he worked for the anarcho-syndicalist newspaper Arbetaren. He made his literary debut in 1945 with the novel The Serpent. His work was produced during a brief career marked by major success as well as writer’s block and psychological crises. Dagerman died by suicide in 1954.
