Steven Vertovec

Born in 1957, Steven Vertovec is an American social scientist, anthropologist and scholar of religion. He was the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, a professor of transnational anthropology at the University of Oxford, and director of the British Economic and Social Research Council’s Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS). He became known particularly for coining the term “superdiversity” and for his research on migration and social diversity. From 2008 to 2011, he served on the German Expert Council on Migration and Integration.
