Stephen R. Donaldson (born 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American writer. He spent his childhood in India, where his parents worked as missionaries in a leprosarium. During the Vietnam War, he was a conscientious objector and worked in a hospital for two years. His international breakthrough came with Lord Foul’s Bane (1977), the first book in the fantasy series The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. He later published, among other works, the science-fiction Amnion series. His work has received honors including the John W. Campbell Award and the World Fantasy Award.
