Stephen Greenblatt (born 1943 in Cambridge, Massachusetts) is an American literary scholar. His academic career included teaching English and American literature and language at Harvard University. A leading figure in New Historicism, he is known especially for his work on Shakespeare and the culture and literature of the Renaissance. His best-known books include the Shakespeare biography *Will in the World* (2004) and *The Swerve* (2012), published in German as *Die Wende. Wie die Renaissance begann*. For *The Swerve*, he received the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize; he was also awarded the Holberg Prize in 2016.
