Shani Boianjiu was born in Jerusalem in 1987 and grew up in a village in the Western Galilee near the Lebanese border. During her two-year military service in Israel, she worked as a weapons instructor. She subsequently studied at Harvard University. Her short stories appeared in The New York Times and The New Yorker. The National Book Foundation selected her as the youngest author for its “5 Under 35” list. Her debut novel, The People of Forever Are Not Afraid, was published in 19 languages.
