Sergej Dowlatow

Sergei Donatovich Dovlatov was born in Ufa in 1941. He initially worked as a journalist and wrote prose, but for a long time was unable to publish his texts in the Soviet Union. According to contemporary accounts, the printing plates for his first book were destroyed on the orders of the KGB. After publishing in Western journals, Dovlatov was expelled from the Journalists’ Union of the USSR. He emigrated to the United States in 1978, where his literary work gained recognition.
