Sei Shōnagon (born c. 966, died after 1010) was a Japanese court lady of the Heian period. From the age of 26, she served Empress Sadako and spent about a decade at court. During this time, she wrote Makura no Sōshi (The Pillow Book), a collection of notes, observations, and literary reflections that is now regarded as a classic of Japanese literature.
