Sabahattin Ali

Sabahattin Ali (1907–1948) was a Turkish writer, poet and journalist. Born in Gümülcine, in what is now northern Greece, he studied in Berlin and Potsdam before teaching German in Turkey. As an editor of satirical and literary journals and through his socially critical writing, he repeatedly came into conflict with state censorship. In 1932, he was imprisoned for a satirical poem about Atatürk. His best-known works include the novel *Madonna in a Fur Coat* (1943). Ali was murdered on 2 April 1948 while attempting to flee to Bulgaria; the exact circumstances of his death remained unclear.
