Rudolf Vrba

Rudolf Vrba was born in 1924 in Topoľčany, Slovakia, and died in Canada in 2006. At the age of seventeen, he attempted to escape deportation to German labor camps by fleeing to England. After his arrest, he was sent via the camps at Nováky and Majdanek to Auschwitz, where he was imprisoned for almost two years as prisoner no. 44070. After the Second World War, Vrba studied in Prague. His autobiographical account, *Ich kann nicht vergeben*, was first published in England in 1963 and translated into numerous languages.
