Robert E. Howard (1906–1936) was an American writer. He wrote fantasy, adventure, and horror stories, as well as several Western novels. He became best known for creating Conan the Barbarian. Through his stories, Howard became one of the defining authors of the sword-and-sorcery subgenre and a prominent representative of low fantasy. In 1973, he was posthumously awarded a British Fantasy Award as a special award for “Marches of Valhalla”.
